The lost opera «Creonte» revived in Chernivtsi

On October 3, 2025, the world premiere of Ukrainian composer Dmytro Bortniansky’s first opera «Creonte» took place in a theatrical production co-organized by the Global Harmony Art Foundation and the L.I. Medved's Research Center.

After nearly 250 years of oblivion, «Creonte» was brought back to life on the stage of the Olha Kobylianska Chernivtsi Academic Regional Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre. The initiative to hold the world premiere in this historic building came from co-organizer of the project and founder of the Bukovinian Association in Kyiv, Professor Mykola Prodanchuk, who emphasized that this theatre most closely resembles Venice’s San Benedetto Theatre, where the opera was first performed in 1776.

The production was created by a highly professional team of specialists from Chernivtsi, Kyiv, and Lviv. The opera was performed in Italian with Ukrainian subtitles and broadcast live on the city’s Theatre Square, allowing the residents of Chernivtsi to take part in this unique event celebrating the revival of an invaluable cultural heritage.

The world premiere of the staged production of opera «Creonte» received international recognition and took place under the patronage of two globally renowned organizations – UNESCO and Europa Nostra.

The Global Harmony Art Foundation extends its sincere gratitude to everyone who made the realization of the project «Returning to the World of Dmytro Bortniansky’s First Opera «Creonte» possible:
